Parity builds the open-source technologies needed to power an unstoppable, decentralised web—known as Web3—and helps developers and organisations implement and build upon the Web3 tech stack.

About the technology and the team:
ink is a toolkit for writing smart contracts for Polkadot. We use Rust as the language for writing smart contracts. Those contracts are deployed to Polkadot parachains or standalone Substrate chains.


The development of ink is currently driven by Parity, but we want to transition to more of a community-driven project in the foreseeable future.

We have a broad range of channels where we communicate with stakeholders:
on GitHub, Substrate StackExchange, Twitter Spaces, in chat rooms, etc.

Our team is a humorous bunch and a non-corporate working culture is important for our team. We work in an asynchronous, remote-first environment with a laissez-faire working style that is guided where it becomes necessary. We don't have daily standups, Scrum, sprints or OKRs and want to keep it this way. We follow a loose agile process and don't want to introduce process overhead.

Why we are looking for a TPM:
ink started as a project from developers for developers.

It has grown a lot in popularity and we now require some more help in roadmap, stakeholder and community management.

The term Technical Project Manager in the traditional sense is probably not the correct name for this role. It will be some form of technical roadmap, stakeholder and community management.

The person we are looking for should be up for a broad scope of tasks that will venture beyond the traditional understanding of a TPM role.


Some of the challenges we face:

  • We have a variety of different stakeholders: from excited enthusiasts to company teams to experienced developers. Important development and project updates should be communicated to relevant stakeholders in a timely manner, we strive to be as transparent as possible.
  • There are a number of teams starting to work with ink. Since we are still a young project, it's important to proactively talk to those teams about issues they are facing and bubble them up. This also includes being proactive about issues that pop up on e.g. StackExchange.
  • Prioritisation is challenging for us, as the space evolves quickly and different stakeholders have different needs, while we have limited resources. Part of this role is to make sure that we don't get too distracted from what is important and identify issues that can be delegated to (ideally) people from our community.
  • We want to retain a welcoming community environment and be on top of issues that are raised. This has become challenging, as we have different channels and plattforms. Without a dedicated person, it's easy for issues to fall in between the cracks and people not receiving a timely response.

Tasks:

  • Communicate information in a structured manner to our stakeholders. Clear and written communication has to be important to you and you should excel in summarising complex information in a way that fits the stakeholder audience, as well as highlighting what is important for them.
  • Our brand is lighthearted with a humorous undertone. This is something that we would like to see in your communication with the community and stakeholders as well.
  • Make sure all StackExchange questions are answered, pull requests are reviewed in time, newly created issues get an answer.
  • Interact with the community, e.g. by attending Twitter Spaces to talk about what's going on in our project and the roadmap.

About you:

  • You have a technical background. ink is about developing smart contracts, it is a technical product and you should be able to follow the highlevel concepts. A background in handson software development would be ideal.
  • You have an understanding of the concepts behind smart contracts.
  • You have an understanding of the open source world and have interacted with open source communities before.
  • Passion about blockchains and Web
  • Knowledge of GitHub workflows, PRs, issue tracking and milestones.
  • Proactive, progressdriven and analytical mindset.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skillset.
  • The ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
