Carlos Montez Champalimaud (Champalimaud Foundation) in the context of the project entitled "EurDyscover:

Pathophysiology of dystonia - role of gene-environment interaction and common pathophysiological pathways", with reference "EJPRD/0001/2019" from the call No "1st EJP RD Joint Transnational Call for Rare Diseases Research Project", funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), through Portuguese National Funds (PIDDAC).


  • Measure the activity of striatal medium spiny neurons using miniature microscopy and calcium sensors;
  • Perform stereotaxic injections and fine surgeries in mice;
  • Perform optogenetic experiments manipulating striatal, cerebellar and/or thalamic projections;
  • Assess behaviour in animal models of dystonia.

Master's degree student in the Life Sciences, or similar areas (Biology, Bioengineering, Biotechnology)

Minimum qualifications

Student currently enrolled in a master's degree in Life Sciences or similar areas (Biology, Bioengineering, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Medicine, etc.)

Specific Requirements

Essential skills

  • Practical research experience in Neuroscience;
  • Ability to present results in oral and written format; experience communicating results to a technical audience;
  • Demonstrates potential for technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others, and independent thought;
  • Excellent level of English.
Desirable skills that will also be considered

  • License from the Direção Geral de Alimentação e Veterinária (DGAV) to work with laboratory animals is highly desirable;
  • Behavioral experiments with mice, stereotaxic injections;
  • Background in data science and statistics with preferred research experience with statistical analysis on a large volume of data;
  • Working knowledge of programming languages (Python, MATLAB, etc.).

Maximum allowable duration


The Fellowship will have the duration of 10 months, (never surpassing the termination date of the project, expected at 30/06/2024).

The position is expected to start on or after 01/09/2023, in exclusiveness regime, as regulated by Lei n.o 40/2004, de 18 de Agosto, FCT (Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação Científica) and FCT Research Fellowship Regulations, as well as the Fellowship Regulations of the Champalimaud Foundation.
