The Polytechnic of Leiria is now opening applications for a scientific research fellowship (BI 3), within the project " Embalagem do Futuro | ECOLÓGICA+DIGITAL+INCLUSIVA ", profile Centre for Life Cycle Assessment and Sustainability (PPS17), funding integrated into the European funds allocated to Portugal by PRR - Plano de Recuperação e Resiliência, in the scope of the MRR - Mecanismo de Recuperação e Resiliência, da União Europeia (UE), through Next Generation UE, for the period 2021 – 2026, under the following conditions:
SCIENTIFIC AREA: Environmental Engineering.
RECIPIENTS: Undergraduate students enrolled in a master's degree course in Environmental Energy Engineering/Environmental Engineering or related areas, with proven experience in the project area according to the work plan.
DURATION: 12 months, eventually renewable until the end of the project or the maximum duration for this research fellowship type. The fellowship is due to start in December 2024.
WORK PLAN: Accompanying and supporting the development of the task relating to the identification and quantification of microcontaminants in packaging, in particular perfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS) of the project in question, namely:
Survey of emerging microcontaminants (MCEs) relevant to the project and based on the occurrence and levels of PFAS in food packaging used in Portugal;
Comparative analysis of the methodologies used within the institutions participating in the project to determine the MCEs under study;
Selection and implementation of analytical methodologies to validate the efficiency of conventional wastewater treatment (WWTP) for the elimination of MCEs;
Study of the release of PFAS in food packaging to estimate consumer exposure.
GRANT FINANCIAL COMPONENTS: Monthly maintenance stipend of €990,98, according to the FCT Regulation for Studentships and Fellowships, plus, if applicable, the monthly Voluntary Social Insurance, according to the conditions defined in the Research Fellowship Holder statute, as well as the Personal Accident Insurance, during the research fellowship period.
PAYMENT: The maintenance stipend will be processed monthly, through bank transfer, to the account identified by the research fellow.
ACTIVITY SCHEME: Exclusivity, according to the applicable legislation.

SELECTION METHOD AND EVALUATION CRITERIA: The evaluation will be made through curriculum analysis and possible interview and will focus on the candidate's merit (MC), where they will be considered and weighted according to the following:
Adequacy of the area of academic study (AE)
Final classification of the academic degree (CF)
General experience/knowledge (E)
Specific knowledge in the area (CE)
Interview (Ent)
Final grade without interview: NF (MC) = [AE*0,25 + CF*0,25 + E* 0,25 + CE*0,25];
If the Jury decides to conduct interviews (Ent) to the candidates, the following formula will be applied to calculate the final grade: NF (MC) = [AE*0,20 + CF*0,20 + E* 0,25 + CE*0,25 + Ent*0,10]
The interview will only be applied to candidates who score 10 or more points in the curriculum analysis.
ELIGIBILITY OF CANDIDATES: The following candidates are eligible:
National citizens or citizens of other member states of the European Union;
Third-party states citizens;
Stateless persons;
Beneficiaries of political refugee status.
RESULTS | DISCLOSURE AND COMPLAINTS: The jury will send to the candidates, by e-mail, the provisional results of the evaluation within 90 working days after the application deadline. After this disclosure, candidates have 10 working days to pronounce, if they wish, in the appropriate form available on the institutional webpage. The final decision will be taken within a maximum period of 60 working days after the conclusion of the previous hearing of interested parties.
