**Admission Requirements**:
Research grants are intended:
- for students enrolled in a degree-conferring course to carry out R&D activities with the aim to consolidate their scientific training through the development of research work leading to the attainment of the respective academic degree or completion of the course (integrated or not in R&D projects).
- for students enrolled in courses that do not confer an academic degree but which are integrated in an educational project of a higher education institution and are developed in association or cooperation with one or several R&D units.
In what concerns the admission requirements for this research grant in particular:
- Currently enrolled (or to be enrolled) in a PhD in Computer Science and Engineering;
- Excellent academic and practical background in programming, machine learning, and natural language processing;
- Solid knowledge of reinforcement learning and machine translation;
**Work Objectives**:
The activities will be focused mostly on the use case “Multilingual Customer Service Dialogue Tool”. The tool should enable a customer service agent to provide support to global users (by text) in cases where the customer and agent speak different languages, using the context of the conversation to assist the agent, with guidance to provide helpful, personalized answers that take into account the formality level and the cultural context of the customer and the brand, as well as monitoring the satisfaction and engagement of the customer. The focus will be primarily on the work packages WP4 (“Adaptable and context-aware models”) and WP5 (“Uncertainty-aware, robust and explainable models”), namely in the following activities: Task T4.1: Adaptable, multimodal generation and translation. Task T4.2: Contextualisation and emotion tracking. Task T5.3: Robustness to noisy input.

The work will be developed at the premises of Instituto de Telecomunicações - Lisboa, under the supervision of Professor André Martins.
**Duration**:
12 months, with the possibility of renewal (according to the regulations defined by FCT). Start date: April 1st, 2024 or soon thereafter.
**Monthly salary**:
1800€ according to the table of grant amounts awarded directly by Instituto de Telecomunicações.
