Bioinformatics Intern

Company Description

The SGS Global Biosciences Center is looking for a bioinformatics intern. They are expected to learn about and participate in the development of SGS's tailored bioinformatics pipeline & platforms focused on metagenomics and environmental DNA analysis. They will also learn and participate in other data-oriented functions of the bioinformatics team.

This internship is part of IEFP's Activar programme. Applicants must be eligible for this programme, have a completed Masters degree and be able to start the position in August. More details here.

**Job Description**:

- Work with the existing bioinformatics team to establish and further enhance SGS’ bioinformatics pipelines & platforms
- Analyses and interpret of metagenomic data generated by Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) in an ecological context
- Implementing the development and testing of pipelines for data analysis
- Exploring, and being aware of developments related to, publicly available databases
- Working with and managing big data, machine learning and the creative visualization of the results

**Qualifications**:

- MSc in bioinformatics, quantitative ecology, molecular biology, genetics, mathematics, computer sciences or similar
- Eligibility for IEFP's Activar internship
- Enthusiasm for project management skills and for the ability to develop complex IT projects
- Understanding of micro
- & molecular biology, or of quantitative ecology
- Knowledge of with high-performance computing, (multivariate) statistics, data analysis, Bayesian statistics, machine learning, data visualization and big data management is an important asset
- Knowledge of Linux systems, databases, Python, bash, R, or statistics
- Experience with analysis of biodiversity, ecological or Next Generation Sequencing data is preferred
