Integration & Systems Engineer (ROS2, PX4/ArduPilot, Autonomy Integration)

Hertel Robotics is building next-generation autonomy for unmanned systems operating in the harshest environments. We are assembling an elite engineering team to deliver a 12‑week PoC: UAV VTOL on a moving ship in aggressive open ocean conditions.

We are looking for an Integration Engineer who can bridge perception, state estimation, planning, control, and simulation — ensuring every module runs reliably end‑to‑end in ROS2 and PX4/ArduPilot.

This is a hands‑on, execution‑first role: wiring modules together, validating behaviors, creating tests, and pushing the system toward early controlled flight.

What You’ll Build

- PX4/ArduPilot off‑board integration for the PoC mission

- Module testing & orchestration inside AirSim/Unreal

- Early control loops & basic controllers in ROS2 (altitude hold, lateral stabilisation, landing‑descent logic)

- Test harnesses for perception, planning, and control

- Robustness testing across disturbances (wind, ship motion, sensor dropouts)

- Debugging tools, logging tools, and automated reproducibility scripts

Must‑Have Skills

- Strong ROS2 proficiency (nodes, launch files, topics, services)

- Experience integrating multiple autonomy modules in simulation (AirSim, Gazebo, Isaac, etc.)

- Control systems fundamentals (PID, MPC basics, disturbance rejection)

- Ability to implement and test off‑board PX4 control, basic ROS2‑based controllers, mission state machines

- Solid understanding of UAV dynamics (quadrotor preferred)

- Comfort working with logs, debugging tools, visualization tools (rviz, rqt)

- Ability to quickly diagnose timing issues, topic mismatches, latency and sync problems, sensor misconfigurations

Bonus Skills

- UAV hardware experience (building, configuring, flashing)

- Strong Python/C++ coding background

- Experience with real‑world flight testing

- Familiarity with maritime or aerial robotics environments

- Experience with CI/CD tools for robotics (colcon, GitHub Actions, Docker)

- 12‑week full‑time contract (Jan–Mar 2026) / part‑time optional

- Starting remote, then on‑site (Portuguese citizens/residents preferred)

- Strong intention to transition into a full‑time role immediately after PoC funding
