Linux Software Engineer – Ubuntu for Next‑Gen Silicon (multiple roles and seniority levels)

Join Canonical as a Linux Software Engineer – Ubuntu for Next‑Gen Silicon and work remotely on optimizing Ubuntu for emerging silicon technologies such as AI stacks, confidential computing, and containerization.

Canonical’s Partner Engineering Team collaborates with silicon vendors to ensure new architectures like x86, ARM, RISC‑V, PowerPC, and s390x are fully supported. You’ll help maintain high‑quality software across servers, HPC, AI systems, IoT devices, PCs, SmartNICs and automotive systems.

Responsibilities

- Collaborate proactively within a distributed team and with the Ubuntu and Debian communities.

- Evaluate contributions from other engineers to maintain robust software standards.

- Shape the future of Ubuntu by proposing new ideas and advising on related work.

- Debug open‑source and internal code and help customers integrate their apps, SDKs, and build OS images.

- Maintain Ubuntu silicon features and optimized packages for multiple platforms, including servers, IoT devices, and CPUs of varying architectures.

- Work remotely with global travel for internal events 2–4 weeks per year.

Qualifications

- Exceptional academic track record or a compelling alternative narrative.

- Undergraduate degree in a technical subject or equivalent experience.

- Strong fundamentals in C, C++ and Python.

- Experience or interest in Linux distribution packaging, native package management, and dependency resolution.

- Open‑source maintenance or contribution experience and familiarity with licensing.

- Curiosity, flexibility, strong communication, and accountability.

Additional Skills That You Might Also Bring

- Graphics, audio or multimedia stack experience.

- Virtualization and container technologies (Docker, OCI, Kubernetes).

- Hardware enablement for devices such as SmartNICs, NVMe, GPUs, and sensors.

- Performance optimisation, toolchain development, and maintenance.

- Networking protocols and technologies (TCP/IP, DHCP, HTTP/REST).

- Security best practices.

- IoT and embedded systems knowledge (board‑level hardware, SoCs, bootloaders, firmware).
