Offer Description

Call reference: BII_DS4Health_2026

Applications are open for the award of 1 (one) Research Initiation Fellowship (BII) within the project Digital Skills for Healthcare Transformation (DS4Health), reference , funded by the Digital Europe Programme, to be carried out at the NOVA School of Science and Technology of NOVA University Lisbon (NOVA FCT), under the following conditions:

Scientific area

Electrical Engineering.

Admission requirements

Applicants must meet all the following requirements:

  • Enrolment in a bachelor’s degree, an integrated master’s degree or a master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering *;
  • Knowledge of programming and digital systems;
  • Basic knowledge of computer architectures and microprocessors;
  • Knowledge of written and spoken English.

The fellowship is intended for initial R&D activities aimed at introducing the fellowship holder to scientific training through integration into the project, pursuant to Article 6(1) of the Research Fellowship Regulations of NOVA University Lisbon.

*At the application stage, proof of enrolment may be replaced by the Declaration on Honour provided in the annex. Actual enrolment and the corresponding supporting document are required before the fellowship agreement is signed, under the terms of this call.

Preferred qualifications

The following will be valued:

  • Knowledge of microcontrollers, sensors and embedded systems;
  • Experience in assembling and testing hardware/software prototypes;
  • Organisational, technical documentation and teamwork skills.
Work plan

The work plan aims to introduce the fellowship holder to research in digital systems, embedded systems and the Internet of Things (IoT) applied to Digital Health, through the experimental study of microcontroller and sensor configurations for use in DS4Health practical activities.

Under scientific supervision, the fellowship holder will undertake the following activities:

  • Guided review of literature and technical documentation and adaptation of existing materials for an experimental activity involving a microcontroller and a sensor, including the definition of the question to be investigated and the assessment criteria (WP4 — T4.2 — Training material and “tool-kit” Development);
  • Assembly or configuration of a simple prototype using equipment available within the project, and performance of a limited set of tests to observe the effect of a selected configuration on the quality and repeatability of measurements (WP4 — T4.3 — Infrastructure for DS4Health practical training);
  • Recording and analysis of results, identification of limitations, and preparation of a brief technical and scientific report and an experimental protocol, contributing to the validation of training materials (WP4 — T4.4 — Monitoring and supporting the training).

These activities aim to develop introductory skills in literature searching, formulation of research questions, experimental testing, critical analysis of results and scientific communication.

Duration and starting date

The fellowship will last up to 2 (two) months, with an expected starting date in November 2026, and is not renewable.

The actual duration will be determined before the fellowship agreement is signed, within the maximum duration announced, taking into
