About the Role:

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office is seeking a highly skilled Policy Adviser to join its team in Lisbon. As a Policy Adviser, you will play a key role in delivering the UK's policy priorities in Portugal, working closely with the British Embassy and other stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research and analyse justice and home affairs issues in Portugal, providing recommendations to inform UK policy decisions.
  • Support the development of foreign policy initiatives, working closely with the Portuguese government and other international partners.
  • Provide administrative support to the team, including scheduling meetings, preparing reports, and maintaining records.
  • Contribute to the development of the UK's policy priorities in Portugal, working closely with the British Embassy and other stakeholders.

Requirements:

  • Proficiency in written and spoken English and Portuguese (C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
  • Experience of managing multiple competing tasks and meeting the demands of changing priorities, by demonstrating strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Good judgement; be able to work proactively, independently and forward plan.
  • Excellent communications skills, being able to analyse and present written, verbal and quantitative information clearly and concisely.
  • A strong record of teamwork, including working across organisational and team boundaries.
  • Experience of building and maintaining a range of contacts and working relationships including with Government, civil society, and the private sector.
  • Discreet and excellent interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential information and work collaboratively across the embassy.
  • Strong IT skills, particularly with Microsoft Office and Microsoft Teams.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience of working in a Portuguese government or non-government organisation on justice and home affairs issues.

Working Pattern: This is a full-time position based at the British Embassy in Lisbon. The British Embassy's flexible working policy currently allows for staff to work remotely for up to two days a week.

There are opportunities to undertake formal training courses, work shadowing and other, more informal activities to support induction and professional development.
