Lisboa, Portugal Instituto de Telecomunicações Tempo inteiro

A research position for one Research Grant (“Bolsa de Investigação“) is open at Instituto de Telecomunicações, in the scope of the Project MODAS - Monitoring the Oceans with Distributed Acoustic Sensing. This project is funded by FCT/MCTES through national funds and when applicable co-funded EU funds under the 2022.02359.PTDC project reference.
The main objective of the project MODAS-Monitoring the Oceans with DAS- is the use of Distributed Acoustic Sensing on a submarine cable in the Azores to monitor for one year natural hazards (earthquakes and tsunamis) and the environment (sea state, surface currents, soundscape and whales). DAS is an emerging tool that uses fibre as a sensor that measures strain and strain rate at a very high spatial resolution. The objective of the work is to develop software to process the DAS data. Tools are mainly Matlab and Python. In the first phase, software development for real-time and near real time ocean monitoring is addressed. In a second phase, offline data processing, analysis and calibration is addressed. Dissemination activities are another integral part of the work.

**Scientific Area**:
Basic Sciences and Enabling Technologies

**Group**:
Physics of Information and Quantum Technologies - Lx

**Admission Requirements**:
Research grants are intended:

- for students enrolled in a degree-conferring course to carry out R&D activities with the aim to consolidate their scientific training through the development of research work leading to the attainment of the respective academic degree or completion of the course (integrated or not in R&D projects).
- for students enrolled in courses that do not confer an academic degree but which are integrated in an educational project of a higher education institution and are developed in association or cooperation with one or several R&D units.

In what concerns the admission requirements for this research grant in particular:

- Masters students with relevant experience in the scientific area of the project.

**Work Objectives**:
1. Learn about the F-DAS ('Phase sensitive distributed acoustic sensing') system that underpins the MODAS (Monitoring the Oceans with Distributed Acoustic Sensing) project.
2. Collaborate on the preliminary analysis of F-DAS data (with Matlab and/or Python tools).
3. Collaborating to develop real-time processing modules
4. Developing and testing software for real-time assessment of natural hazards such as earthquakes and tsunamis, and for real-time or near-real-time ocean monitoring.
5. Develop and test software for offline processing of 1 year of recorded signals.
6. Write technical reports and scientific publications and participate in the organisation of a workshop.

**Applicable legislation**:
**Place of work**:
The work will be developed at the premises of Instituto de Telecomunicações - Lisboa, under the supervision of Professor Manfred Niehus.

**Duration**:
5 months, with the possibility of renewal (according to the regulations defined by FCT). Start date: April 1st, 2025 or soon thereafter.

**Monthly salary**:
The payment will be made by bank transfer.

**Selection criteria**:

- C1 (50%)
Suitability of the scientific area of training
