Overview

The Piteira Research Group – System Engineering – is dedicated to bring advanced Nanoeletronics, into mainstream applications within the semiconductor, biomedical, agrifood, industrial, and industrial markets.

We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative Hardware Designer to join our group within the scope of national funded projects. We expect the candidate to lead and contribute to the design, assembly, and characterisation of advanced hardware systems. This role involves the design, development, testing, and characterisation of embedded electronic systems that include sensing and actuators designed and fabricated at INL for Agri-food and Bio-medical applications.

Job Duties

The job duties will be the following:

  • Create schematics and PCB layouts using industry-standard tools (Altium, KiCad);
  • Perform hardware validation, characterisation, and debugging across various operating conditions;
  • Collaborate with firmware, mechanical, and manufacturing teams to ensure seamless integration;
  • Develop and execute test plans, including automated test setups and data analysis, supporting the IC design testing and characterisation;
  • Design and develop embedded hardware systems including microcontroller, SoC, and FPGA-based platforms (preferred).

Mandatory Qualifications

Education

  • MSc in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field with a focus on Hardware development.

Experience and Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of embedded systems, signal integrity, and power management.
  • Experience with microcontrollers, SoCs, and communication interfaces (e.g., SPI, I2C, UART, CAN) and wireless sub-systems (e.g., BLE, Zigbee);
  • Power supply design and regulation (DC/DC converters, LDOs);
  • PCB layout best practices for high-speed and mixed-signal designs;
  • Development of test protocols and fixtures;
  • Measurement and analysis of electrical parameters under varying conditions;
  • Debugging and failure analysis using lab instrumentation.

Other Valued Skills and Qualifications

  • Proficiency with design tools such as Altium Designer, OrCAD, KiCad, or similar;
  • Experience with lab equipment: oscilloscopes, logic analysers, spectrum analysers, multimeters, etc;
  • Familiarity with scripting languages (e.g., Python, LabVIEW) for test automation;
  • Experience with FPGA design and programming (e.g., VHDL, Verilog);
  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field with a focus on Hardware development.

Personal Skills

  • Strong problem-solving skills, creativity, and ability to work independently in an exploratory research environment;
  • Previous experience working on ground breaking technologies in a collaborative, intellectually rich environment.

How the Selection Process works
 

A. Applications eligibility check

The question based interview will evaluate the match between the candidate's profile and the requirements for the position, including the technical and personal skills. To better support this stage, the candidate may be requested to prepare a short presentation.

D. Nomination

The selected candidate will be nominated and formally offered the position, including the disclosure of the contractual conditions.
