 Introduction

This is an opportunity to be part of the engineering team in Portugal of  an AI- and automation-driven financial crime operations company from Iceland, headquartered in Reykjavík. The Company is focused on transforming how financial institutions fight financial crime, building and operating an Azure-native platform that combines scalable data engineering, advanced agentic AI, and workflow automation to make AML operations faster, more accurate, and significantly more cost-efficient. The target is moving beyond software-as-a-tool toward delivering automation, intelligent agents, and operational outcomes. This includes:
  • Agentic AI systems to support and automate case decisions
  • Precomputed analytics, detection engines, and workflow automation
  • Human-in-the-loop intelligence that reduces manual workload
  • A platform that enables significantly lower cost-to-serve for AML operations


This shift requires a strong engineering discipline centered on design clarity, scalability, and long-term maintainability. The Company maintains a rigorous design- first culture, where architectural decisions are documented, reviewed, and debated before implementation. Engineers work through design documents, RFCs, and structured discussions to ensure transparency and consistency across the platform.
The new engineering group will be building the technological core of this operational transformation.

Technology Context:
The Company uses tools such as Azure, AKS, Spark, Iceberg, Trino, Redis, Keycloak, and React. Rather than focusing on specific tools, the Company seeks engineers who can think conceptually, adapt, learn quickly, navigate multiple environments and create reliable systems. 

Responsibilities
 
Distributed Systems & Detection Engineer (Senior Backend/Data Engineer) role designs, builds, and optimizes the Company's detection engine—the core system responsible for evaluating large-scale financial data, computing behaviours, and executing detection logic.

Key Requirements
  • Deep understanding of distributed computation and data pipelines
  • Ability to reason mathematically about performance and algorithmic complexity
  • Experience with large-scale analytics engines (e.g., Spark, Iceberg, Trino)
  • Skilled in designing deterministic, high-performance pipelines
  • Strong problem-solving and architectural ownership
