Offer Description Scientific Area: Information and Data Sciences
Group: Multimedia Signal Processing – Lx
Work Objectives:
Design and implement compression algorithms for event-based data, including lossy and learning-based approaches.
Develop models for aggregating and representing neuromorphic event data.
Integrate the proposed codec into selected use cases, such as high-frame-rate video reconstruction and machine vision tasks.
Evaluate compression performance through rate–distortion analysis, objective quality metrics, and task-oriented benchmarks.
Disseminate research results through scientific publications, including conference papers, and contribute to international standardization activities within JPEG XE.
Place of work: The work will be developed at the premises of Instituto de Telecomunicações at Instituto Superior Técnico, Avenida Rovisco Pais 1, under the supervision of Prof./Dr. João Miguel Duarte Ascenso
Duration: 12 months, with the possibility of renewal. This type of scholarship has a maximum duration of 2 years. Start date: november or soon thereafter

Additional Information Monthly salary: ,64€ according to the table of grant amounts awarded directly by FCT for positions held in Portugal ( ). The payment will be made by bank transfer.
Eligibility criteria Hold a M.Sc. degree completed in electrical, telecommunications and/or computer engineering; Be enrolled on a PhD degree programme in Computer science or Electrical and Computer Engineering; Strong programming skills in languages such as Python or C/C++ Knowledge at least one of the following areas: image and video compression, event-based or neuromorphic vision, signal processing, or machine learning and deep learning for visual data. A strong motivation to conduct research and disseminate scientific results. Good written and spoken English communication skills.
Selection process Selection criteria:
C2 (50%) Suitability of the candidate profile based on relevant work experience for the tasks described in the project work plan
