Accountant (IRS)

Company Description Smartax is building an AI-powered assistant that helps expats and self-employed professionals in Portugal prepare and submit their annual IRS tax returns quickly and correctly — without replacing accountants, but by encoding tax logic into clear, user-friendly workflows. We work closely with tax professionals to translate real Portuguese tax practice into a digital product. Role Description We are looking for an IRS Accountant (Portugal) to work with us on a contract basis in a remote setup. This role is not about servicing end clients day-to-day. Instead, you will help us validate tax logic, rules, and edge cases used inside Smartax, ensuring that what users prepare in the product matches real IRS (Modelo 3) requirements. You will: review and validate tax calculation logic and assumptions help map real-world tax scenarios to IRS annexes (A, B, J, etc.) verify that generated outputs are compliant with current Portuguese tax rules flag ambiguities, exceptions, and risky cases collaborate with the product team to explain why something is done a certain way — not just how Occasionally, you may review anonymized example cases or drafts to ensure correctness and consistency. Qualifications Required Solid practical experience with Portuguese IRS (Modelo 3) declarations Strong understanding of tax filing, annex structure, and compliance rules High attention to detail and ability to spot inconsistencies Ability to explain tax logic clearly to non-accountants Comfortable working independently in a remote, async environment Nice to have Experience with expats, freelancers, or foreign income Prior involvement in tax software, calculators, or automation Familiarity with reviewing formulas, spreadsheets, or rule-based systems CPA / Contabilista Certificado (preferred, not mandatory)
