Backend Engineer

As a Backend Engineer, you will design and build the services behind a European B2B marketplace platform for a leading European trade and services cooperation connecting thousands of suppliers and hundreds of retailers. The platform brings a growing set of digital services for retail and industry together in one modern, cloud-native experience on Microsoft Azure.

You will develop robust backend services with Java and Quarkus, and care about how they are built, shipped and run, working closely with the frontend, product and DevOps colleagues who share the platform with you.

Your Role and Responsibilities:

• Backend Services & APIs: Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services and RESTful APIs using Java and Quarkus, following cloud-native and microservices best practices.
• API Contracts: Model and expose clean, well-structured JSON contracts that the frontend and other services rely on, ensuring consistency and maintainability.
• Integration & Data: Integrate with core enterprise systems, databases, and third-party services, handling data persistence, transformation, and orchestration.
• Business Processes: Turn complex B2B processes between retailers and suppliers, such as invoicing, payments and claims handling, into reliable, well-tested services.
• Quality & Delivery: Write robust unit and integration tests, and contribute to code reviews and engineering standards.
• DevOps Mindset: Take part in the full lifecycle of your services: containerize them with Docker, contribute to CI/CD pipelines and Kubernetes deployments, and help monitor and improve how they run in production.

Your Skills and Experiences:

• Solid professional experience with Java (17+) and Quarkus; strong experience with Spring Boot is also highly valued, along with a willingness to work with Quarkus.
• Strong understanding of RESTful API design and microservices architecture.
• Experience with testing frameworks such as JUnit and Mockito.
• Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines, and a genuine interest in DevOps practices and in owning your services in production.
• Experience with Microsoft Azure, Infrastructure as Code (such as Terraform or Bicep), observability tools, or messaging systems (such as Kafka) is a plus.
• A pragmatic mindset, with the ability to take ownership of features from design to production.
• A highly collaborative mindset with excellent communication skills to thrive in cross-functional Agile/Scrum teams.
• Fluency in English (spoken and written); German is a plus.
