ROLE OF SCHOOL PRINCIPAL PERSONAL QUALITIES
We are seeking an individual with strong leadership, clarity of purpose, and high expectations for all. This individual has the confidence to work with an evidence-informed approach to education, seeking continuous improvement for our school.

As the educational leader, you will build on our reputation and will champion the Hypha ethos and support, develop, and empower our staff.

The skills required to move Hypha forward are many and varied but essential are diplomacy, fairness, assertiveness, tolerance, empathy, a sense of humor and the ability to be both a leader and a key team player.


GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Demonstrate an explicit commitment to the philosophy, mission and values of the school as determined by the General Manager / Board of Directors
  • Plan, organize, administer, manage, and coordinate all education programs of the school.
  • Lead and develop the school, securing the commitment of all stakeholders to a culture of constant improvement.
  • Lead, motivate, support, challenge and develop staff, providing effective onboarding, continued professional development and performance management in line with Hypha's policies.
  • Lead the recruitment, induction, and management of teaching staff. Plan and provide teacher orientation (for new and returning staff)
  • Serve as a member of the Admissions Committee. Ensure that students entering the school are a good fit and are appropriately placed
  • To ensure all employees have a clear indication of the company's goals and that team and individual objectives are directed towards achieving same.
  • Collaborate with the General Manager to obtain or maintain any necessary accreditation status.
  • Prepare and manage the annual school budget in collaboration with the General Manager
  • Drive high retention and growth in student numbers
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of the School Improvement Plan.
  • Represent the school at educational and other appropriate events
  • Schedule and prepare professional development activities/topics for the staff, in collaboration with General Manager
  • Keep abreast of educational developments to ensure school implements an evidence-informed approach to education
  • Responsible to safeguard and promote the welfare of children, and to work together with others to ensure adequate arrangements within the school help to identify, assess, and support children who may be suffering harm
  • Ensure that the organizational systems throughout the school are effective and appropriate
  • Prepare the school teaching schedules and duty roster
  • Arranging appropriate relief for absent teachers. Work with substitutes when they arrive. Also be prepared to substitute in emergency situations.
  • Schedule, plan and manage the parent-teacher conferences, information sessions, and other such routine and extraordinary events

CURRICULUM RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Establish, maintain and continue to develop the school curriculum
  • Ensure that the curriculum is delivered in line with school policies and values
  • Responsible for curriculum maps, schemes of work (long and medium term) and the monitoring of short-term planning through lesson objectives, ensuring appropriate curriculum coverage for all subjects.
  • Responsible for communicating the vision, goals, and expectations of the curriculum to the educators.
  • Responsible for the implementation of the Curriculum Policy and ensuring that the curriculum offered meets the needs of all students.
  • Responsible for monitoring the delivery of curriculum subjects through the review of the lesson plans, in-class observations, and tracking of student progress in the subject area.
  • Set a model of excellence in classroom practice
  • Oversee the ordering of textbooks and teaching resources
  • Responsible for reviewing the materials used to deliver the curriculum (textbooks, resources, and technology that support your instruction) to evaluate the quality, relevance, and alignment of the materials with the standards and the curriculum map.
  • Serves as an instructional leader for the school and drives teaching and learning designed to meet the student needs to create continuous improvement and equitable academic and social-emotional outcomes for all students.

COMMUNICATION WITH THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY

  • Communicating regularly with parents both in writing and in person
  • Oversee and approve all written communication to parents and the wider community
  • Develop and send a regular newsletter to the school community
  • Ensure that all appropriate school guides, handbooks and curriculum outlines are published and revised for parents and students
  • Convene regular school meetings as appropriate
  • Manage any disciplinary issues
  • Deal proactively and in a timely manner, with parental concerns PUBLIC RELATIONS
  • Develop and maintain a good rapport with parents, students, and leaders in the community
  • Provide continual communication to parents and students on school activities, norms, and policies
  • Support and attend all major school events
  • Work to maintain effective partnerships with the community, promoting and representing the school at local, national and international level
  • Exhibit and model a respect for the culture, language, beliefs and people of the school's host country, Portugal
  • Serve as an effective ambassador for the school both locally and internationally

REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 5 years senior leadership experience or equivalent responsibility
  • Master's degree in education or equivalent degree
  • Qualified teacher status and 8+ years of teaching experience
  • Ability to work well in a team and a hardworking and highly motivated work ethic.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, time-management and decision-making skills
  • Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to present and communicate information in a logical, clear, and concise format.
  • Excellent active listening and presentation skills PREFERRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience teaching in an international school
  • Knowledge of international and national accreditation, inspection, and evaluation frameworks
  • Working knowledge of the English and the Cambridge International Curriculum
  • Proficiency in Portuguese
