Two-dimensional thin films are well-known for their high optical nonlinearities, making them ideal candidates for mode-locking of laser systems. Recently, during two PhD theses, we optimized Sb2Te3 and Bi2Se3 layers to obtain significant nonlinear absorption, achieving the highest saturable absorption behavior reported in the field of nonlinear optics by similar experimental techniques.
The high optical nonlinearities stem from the topological insulator character of the layers observable in 2D structures. However, the relationship between the structural characteristics of topological insulators and their optical nonlinearities remains insufficiently explored. The target of this thesis is to elucidate the origins of the nonlinear optical properties of 2D topological insulators (like Sb2Te3, Bi2Te3, and Bi2Se3), enhancing understanding of the physical mechanisms underlying nonlinear refraction and absorption in thin films.
Objectives of the thesis:
Thin film deposition and preparation: Thin films will be deposited using the electron beam deposition technique available at the Fresnel Institute (Espace Photonique). Optimal crystallization of the thin film layers is necessary to enhance optical nonlinearities, currently achieved by heating the thin films in an oven. A new experimental setup will be built during this thesis for higher precision annealing using a high repetition rate femtosecond laser.
Nonlinear optical studies: The deposited and optimized 2D layers will be analyzed using the Z-scan technique at the Institute Fresnel. A femtosecond laser system, which is a hybrid (crystal/fiber), passively mode-locked laser delivering 400 fs duration pulses at 1030 nm, will be employed. This system allows tuning the laser wavelength across the UV, visible, and IR spectrum (200 nm to 2.5 µm), making it ideal for investigating the impact of repetition rate, wavelength, and pulse duration on nonlinear optical responses.
Ultrafast dynamics of the 2D layers: A comprehensive understanding of laser-matter interaction will be achieved through a thorough study of carrier dynamics in topological insulators during light excitation. A pump-probe optical spectroscopy setup will be constructed by the PhD student, utilizing higher energy pump pulses to generate photo-excited carriers and less intense probe pulses to detect transmittance changes in the sample.
Apart from nonlinear optical investigations, the student will participate in all experimental steps necessary for obtaining giant optical nonlinearities, including thin film deposition, annealing, X-Ray Diffraction studies (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) studies, and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) investigations.
