Offer Description Quantum sensing technologies powered by solid-state spin defects have already shown a huge potential for covering the growing need for high-precision sensors, both for basic science and for industrial applications. However, state-of-the-art quantum sensing methods based on spin defects hosted in three-dimensional (3D) materials such as nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond are facing several obstacles including (i) a limited spatial resolution resulting from the dim proximity that can be achieved between the quantum sensor and the target sample, and (ii) the impossibility to engineer ultrathin, flexible quantum sensors that could be easily transferred onto the samples to be probed (microelectronic devices, biological samples, 2D materials…).
The targeted breakthrough of this project will be to overcome these limitations through the design of a new flexible quantum sensor based on an atomically-thin two-dimensional (2D) material . To this end, we will exploit the magneto-optical properties of recently discovered optically-active spin defects in 2D hexagonal boron nitride (hBN).
This post-doctoral position aims at assessing the potential of this quantum sensor in probing new quantum phases of matter that appear in complex van der Waals heterostructures (i.e. stacks of 2D materials). These structures have attracted huge interest for the past few years as new properties can be easily designed through the control of the twist angle between the layers (superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene, sliding ferroelectricity in marginally twisted hBN, moiré excitons in heterobilayers of transition metal dichalcogenide…). An atomically-thin hBN quantum sensor in contact with such vdW heterostructures will constitute the ultimate integration in terms of proximity (one atomic distance) between the quantum defect and the interface to be probed.
This project will make a bridge between two vibrant fields of research in condensed matter: (i) point defects for quantum sensing technologies and (ii) 2D materials heterostructures. It is expected to have strong and broad impacts for applied science (printed electronics, spintronics, optoelectronics …) and from the point of view of fundamental physics (quantum states of matter).
Local environment:
The project will be conducted in the Quantum Optoelectronics group at Laboratory of Physics and Chemistry of Nano-Objects (LPCNO) in Toulouse, France. The laboratory is a mixed research unit between CNRS, University of Toulouse and INSA Toulouse. The Quantum Optoelectronics group has a world-renowned expertise in the fabrication and the magneto-optical properties of van der Waals heterostructures involving various 2D materials (hBN, TMD, 2D magnets …). The team has published almost 100 papers in the field of 2D materials since 2012 and has recently founded the "Exfolab", a state-of-the-art open platform dedicated to the fabrication of van der Waals heterostructures by mechanical exfoliation and dry transfer techniques. The team also benefits from state-of-the-art optical spectroscopy setups including 6 closed-cycle He cryostats (including 4 with magnetic fields up to 9T), tunable cw and pulsed lasers from UV to near IR and ultra-sensitive and fast detectors. This research project will be conducted in close collaboration with the L2C Montpellier (Vincent Jacques, Guillaume Cassabois) and the CEMES Toulouse for the creation of spin defects.
Candidate Requirements:
We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a PhD in experimental physics with a focus on optical spectroscopy or quantum optics. Expertise in 2D materials is an asset but not mandatory. Programming and interfacing skills with Python is recommended. Good communication skills and team working spirit are also necessary.
