Offer Description Imagine that we could make a movie in 3D of the stress evolution in the bulk of the rock, with a sensitivity well below the rock yield strength. At the same time, imagine we could track and visualize in 3D the development and propagation of cracks in a rock cliff, making a movie of the fracturing process in the bulk of the rock. From these movies, we could then evaluate how external forcings like weather parameters (temperature fluctuations, solar insulation, freeze-thaw cycles, rainfalls, moisture) influence the distribution of stress, and moreover how stress changes induce rock fracturing, thus revealing the mechanics of sub-critical failure. This new capacity will allow us to solve a key puzzle in the science of erosion: the dynamics of cracking at the origin of rockfalls.
The big question this project will explore is the physics of sub-critical cracking of mountain cliffs due to environmental forcing. To that end, we will quantify, map and monitor stress changes, the production of fracture in the bulk of rock cliffs, and the production of debris (rockfalls), allowing us to identify the driving factors of cracks and debris production. This will be performed locally and over short time scales (hours to months), and will feed numerical models of mechanical rock fatigue in order to build a crack production model. We will deploy a unique experimental multiscale tool on three natural rock outcrops (Alps in France and Switzerland), based on the joint application of 1) an acoustic imaging tool, 2) larger-scale observations of the outcrop from environmental seismology, meteorology, and optical imaging. The acoustic imaging tool, which we will adapt from indoor to outdoor conditions for natural rock outcrops, will exploit diffuse waves collected from dense sensor arrays with unprecedented high resolution and high sensitivity. Results will capture generic climatic features that cause rock fracturing. We will then model the effect of climate change on rock erosion process by applying climate scenarios from Regional Climate Models to the crack fracturation and debris production model.
We are looking for candidates at various levels (Engineering, PhD, Post-Doc) with various backgrounds including mechanics, physics or geophysics, engineering, environmental sciences and natural hazards, data analysis and applied mathematics.
Positions will cover experimental developments, numerical model and high-performance computing. A broad interest in geosciences and/or natural hazards would be appreciated. Interests and skills in mountaineering and climbing are optional but also appreciated.
