**Young Learner Assistant (YLA) - Part-time**

**Role Purpose**

To ensure the safety and well-being of our young learner students (4-17 years old) while in our care.

To provide support to the Teaching Centre team (Sales and CS, management / coordinator, and teachers) on issues relating to young learners

**Main opportunities and challenges for this role**:
**Responsibilities**
- Implementation of policies and practices of the teaching centre linked to EDI, child well-being, safeguarding and health and safety.
- Supervise arrival and departure of young learners on our premises, in line with British Council policies and procedures.
- Supervise young learners whilst on our premises.
- Inform management /safeguarding focal point of any concerns related to individual child well being.
- Inform management of any concerns about health and safety risks.
- Provide support for children who lack autonomy or if they are unwell (This may include Intimate Care at times).
- Contact and liaise with parents as necessary (e.g. if a child is unwell, to report absences, to discuss other concerns).
- Ensure information about special needs provided at registration is kept confidential but shared with appropriate teacher / centre coordinator.
- Assist teachers and students with fire drills or other evacuation procedures.
- Issue and distribute student cards at the beginning of the year.
- Assist registrar and academic management team with routine tasks and upkeep of the teaching centre when appropriate.
- Assist with organising and smooth running of parent meetings and other YL events.

**Main accountabilities**
- To ensure the safety and security of all young learners while they are at the British Council and in British Council charge, in keeping with Health and Safety and Child Protection policies.
- To support the CS team and teachers in all YL related matters.
- To be present for staff meetings where YL matters are concerned.

**Other important features or requirements of the job**:
The working week is Tuesday to Saturday in the main academic year and Monday to Friday during holiday courses. Working hours may extend up to 21.00 on occasion.

Flexibility with timetable is expected.

There may be work on our off-site premises.

Leave is planned according to Teaching Centre holidays.

**Role specific knowledge and experience**:
**Essential**
- Proficiency in spoken and written communication Portuguese
- English - B2 level
- Ability to communicate effectively with children, young people, colleagues, parents and carers
- Experience of working with children 6-17 years old

**Desirable**
- First aid training
- Experience of working in a busy educational environment

**Further Information**

**Pay Band **- Grade Ka

**Contract Type **- Fixed term contract for one year (possibility of renewal)

**Weekly hours** - 26.5 hours per week

**Location - **Coimbra

**Start date of contract - September 2023
