The EIB, the European Union's bank, is seeking to recruit for its Legal Directorate (JU), Operational Policy, Mandates and Non‑EU Operations Department (OPS‑POL), Outside Europe A Division (OEU‑A), Latin America and Caribbean Unit (LAC) a Banking and Finance Lawyer – Spanish speaker at its headquarters in Luxembourg. This is a full‑time position at grade 5, for which the EIB offers a permanent contract.

Purpose

The OEU‑A Division deals with the legal documentation and issues for projects in Neighbourhood Countries (South), Saharan and Sub‑Saharan Africa, Caribbean, Pacific, Asia and Latin America. The purpose of this position is to provide legal advice and support related to lending (sovereign/bank/corporate), guarantee transactions, grants and post‑signature work on EIB projects.

Operating Network

The Division consists of 15 people (lawyers and assistants). It is a friendly team that values cooperation and knowledge sharing.

As a Banking and Finance Lawyer, you will report to the Head of the OEU‑A Division and cooperate with colleagues from the Legal Directorate, front office, risk management, the project team, the finance team and external counterparts such as legal counsels, borrowers and guarantors.

Accountabilities

- Manage contacts and negotiations concerning EIB operations, working with documents across multiple jurisdictions and with counterparts in various countries.

- Draft documents, provide advisory legal support, finalise contracts, and complete related legal formalities and monitoring, including post‑signature events.

- Implement contractual specifics arising from the various mandates underpinning the Division’s activities.

- Contribute to developing and implementing grant documentation and other blending‑related activities.

- Develop standard legal documentation within the Division’s areas of activity, especially outside‑EU specific documentation.

- Co‑operate with team members, including junior colleagues and paralegals, providing coaching where applicable.

- Participate in horizontal activities relevant to the Division.

- Liaise with external consultants and supervise their work.

- Conduct legal research on matters and developments significant to the Division.

- Proactively keep up to date with legal developments in legislation, regulations and jurisprudence pertinent to the Division.

- Develop and maintain relationships within the Bank (including external offices) and represent the EIB externally.

Qualifications

- University degree in law (minimum a Bachelor, preferably a Master), ideally from a civil law country. A Spanish law degree would be an advantage.

- Legal qualification, ideally in a civil law jurisdiction.

- Minimum five years of relevant professional experience in lending and finance, preferably with an international law firm or an in‑house legal department of a financial institution.

- Significant experience drafting and negotiating loan and finance documentation in English and Spanish.

- Excellent written and spoken English and Spanish. Good command of French is a plus.
