As the core team behind Bonsai, an open-source visual reactive programming language, we offer hands-on workshops and courses for scientists and non-scientists. Our goal is to enable anyone to create digital systems that measure and manipulate the world around them by providing a direct visual connection between hardware, software, and data.

About the Role

We are seeking a skilled technical writer or research scientist to help us design and implement new outreach and training materials for the Bonsai community. This includes covering a broad audience, including scientists, artists, and engineers interested in experimental lab activities, open-source hardware, and software. You will contribute to defining the structure and scientific content of our outreach and education activities, preparing documentation, course materials, tutorials, and user guides in multiple media formats.

You will have the opportunity to try out new features and technologies during their prototyping phase, develop ways to explain them to students and scientists worldwide, and maintain a visible presence and impact within our community.

You will also collaborate closely with neuroscientists, participate in international workshops, courses, and other scientific events, and engage with science communicators and engineers as part of our unique multidisciplinary and international network aimed at transforming the relationship between science and society.

You have confidence in explaining intricate concepts in an approachable manner. You are passionate about giving back to the community and working on open-source tools. You are a problem solver who makes things work, and you are enthusiastic about defining and collectively shaping the best solutions while taking initiative to deliver content for a broad audience.

Requirements

  • Excellent grammar and spelling in English
  • Experience with creative writing, including reading and revising existing content
  • Ability to collect and structure scattered information
  • Strong academic or industry background in science communication

Valuable Skills

  • Prior work experience in experimental neuroscience and behavior or cognitive sciences
  • Experience with version control and continuous integration systems
  • Skills in video editing and modern digital content creation tools
  • Experience with GitHub Pages or other static site generator frameworks
  • Good interpersonal skills and experience managing small and medium-sized communities
  • Ability to oversee the documentation and publication process

Salary Range

£50,000-£70,000 per annum, depending on experience
