Senior Accountant – European Tax Compliance Location: Funchal – Madeira Role Overview: As a Senior Accountant with expertise in European tax, you will be responsible for managing financial operations in compliance with both Portuguese accounting standards and EU-wide tax regulations. You will support cross-border financial activities, ensure accurate tax filings across multiple jurisdictions, and advise on international tax matters affecting the business. Key Responsibilities: • Maintain accurate general ledger and financial records in accordance with Portuguese GAAP and IFRS • Prepare and file VAT returns and corporate tax declarations across multiple EU countries • Monitor and interpret changes in EU tax directives and national legislation • Ensure compliance with transfer pricing rules and documentation requirements • Support cross-border transactions, including intra-EU supply chain and service flows • Liaise with tax authorities in Portugal and other EU member states • Assist in statutory audits and provide documentation for tax inspections • Collaborate with legal and finance teams on tax planning and risk mitigation strategies Requirements: • Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field • Certified by the Ordem dos Contabilistas Certificados (OCC) • Minimum 5 years of experience in accounting, with at least 2 years in European tax compliance • Strong knowledge of EU VAT rules, corporate income tax, and withholding tax regulations • Proficient spoken and written English—ability to work in international, English-speaking environments • Fluent in Portuguese Preferred Attributes: • Experience working in a multinational or pan-European environment • Familiarity with EU tax reporting frameworks (e.g., DAC6, Intrastat, EC Sales Lists) • Strong analytical and communication skills • Ability to work independently and manage deadlines across jurisdictions
