Offer Description To develop a numerical FEM modelling of thermo-mechanical behaviour of roller compaction of granular materials using Abaqus/Explicit.
Roller compaction is a cold forming process for granular materials, used in the pharmaceutical industry to agglomerate fine particles and give them functional properties such as fluidity and homogeneity. In this process, quasi-static outside the start-up and stop steps, the material undergoes large plastic deformations and tool-material friction, which generates an increase in temperature in the product. Online measurements by infrared camera have shown an increase in temperature that can impact the mechanical properties (flow function) and physicochemical properties (therapeutic degradation) of pharmaceutical formulations. The RAPSODEE center has developed 3D FEM modelling of the roller compaction of granular materials (mechanical part). Numerical simulations of the boundary value problem are performed in the Abaqus/Explicit using an Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation in which the material is described as a Lagrangian domain and a Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) formulation where the material is represented as an Eulerian domain.
The objective of the position is to enrich the existing modelling with the thermal modelling of the process behaviour (coupling thermal to mechanical behaviour). More precisely, this project involves:
Implementation of thermal behaviour of granular material in the previously developed mechanical modelling of roller compaction process, considering porosity-dependent thermal properties.
Comparison of the numerical predictions of the temperature to the measurements.
Evaluation of the relevance and numerical efficiency of ALE and CEL formulations in the context of the rolling compaction of granular materials.
The recruited candidate will work within the SD2P group (Particulate Solids, Processes and Products) of the RAPSODEE center of IMT Mines Albi. This group develops modelling tools for different processes based on the discrete element method (DEM), the finite element method (FEM) and their coupling. Supervision will be provided by two teacher-researchers and a CNRS research engineer. The candidate will have to enrich the existing numerical modelling (mechanical part) by a thermal modeling of the process. Computer and computation resources will be available to the recruited candidate.
Minimum Requirements PhD in numerical mechanics with ideally knowledge in plasticity modelling and thermal behaviour of materials (experience less than 2 years after the PhD).
Experience in the utilisation of Abaqus/Explicit and Fortran language to write external procedures in Abaqus (highly required).
Autonomous with capacity of learning new numerical techniques.
A sufficient level of English for written and oral scientific communication is required.
