Hybrid – Portugal (flexible locations) Long-term project | International environment About the role We are looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to provide strong technical and people leadership within large-scale, distributed systems. You will define architectural standards, guide teams through complex technical decisions, and act as a key interface between engineering and business stakeholders. This role combines hands-on technical background (backend) with people management, driving execution, mentoring engineering talent, and ensuring alignment between technology and strategic business goals. What you will do Define and validate architectural standards for distributed backend systems. Lead and develop engineering teams, including performance management and career progression. Drive delivery through planning, dependency management, and risk control. Act as the main interface between engineering and business leadership. Contribute to long-term technical roadmaps and continuous improvement initiatives. What we are looking for 5+ years of experience in backend engineering (Java / Spring Boot). Solid experience with microservices and distributed systems. Strong background in cloud platforms (AWS or GCP), Kubernetes and Docker. Proven people management experience (line management, performance reviews). Strong communication and stakeholder management skills. Fluent English for international collaboration. Work model Hybrid and flexible, with on-site presence possible from different locations in Portugal.
